Yuwani

A collaboration between Weave Films and Moogiedown Productions is helping to tell the story behind a song from Numbular that describes the creation story of the region.

The song has been reimagined in a collaboration between Mambali frontman Don Nunggarrgalu and West Australian composer Lachlan Skipworth for the Darwin Symphony Orchestra's 30th anniversary gala concert.

The song and the film Behind Yuwani will have their world premiere at the orchestra's performance as part of the Darwin Festival.

Emma Masters produced the film and co-directed, wrote and edited the work with director of photography Cian McCue.

"It is always an honour and a privilege to work alongside the custodians of ancient stories," Ms Masters said.

"Cian and I approached the short film with the spirit of collaboration - between ourselves, the custodians and community members.

"We loved our time in Numbulwar and thoroughly enjoyed the time we shared with Ernest, Mambali band members and other members of the community as well as the talented Lachlan Skipworth and members of the symphony orchestra - it was a wonderful time of sharing story and music.

"We hope our love for the project and the song shines through in the film."

The performance and screening will be held on Satuday August 24 at the Darwin Convention Centre.

Yuwani was commissioned by the Darwin Symphony Orchestra and made possible with support from Skinnyfish Music.
