To say news of the Darwin cinema closing its doors next month is a blow, is an understatement.
There had been rumours of a closure for a while now, but the last I heard, it wasn't going to happen.
For Darwin to lose a cinema in the city is devastating. Thank goodness we have Deckchair Cinema, but it's a dry season venue. Where are we now going to have Flicks in the Wet? What about the film festivals? And premieres?
Sure, I love Casuarina and Palmerston cinemas - but a standalone cinema in the city was a blessing and an asset, particularly if you wanted to combine it with a dinner or a drink at another venue.
We can only hope that the Darwin Entertainment Centre, who have screened films in the past, can fill the void when premieres or film festivals roll into town.
It sure is a sign of the times for that part of the city which is littered with "closed" signs in neighbouring buildings.
Event cinemas issued a statement today:
We have made the difficult decision to permanently close BCC Cinemas Darwin City after the last session on Wednesday 21 November, 2018.
This decision is based on our strong commitment to keep reinvesting in our other venues in Darwin – the new Event Cinemas Palmerston, and the recently refurbished BCC Casuarina. These venues will continue to bring customers the latest blockbusters and movies from around the globe, as well as special events from the worlds of music, theatre, arts and sport.
We’ve been showing movies at the Mitchell & Briggs Streets location for over 30 years – we’ve shared magical movie moments, first dates, family outings, birthday celebrations, romantic anniversaries, huge belly-laughs, exciting adventures and nightmarish scary scenes with the Darwin community – and we’ve loved every minute.
Our promise to provide exceptional movie experiences in Darwin is stronger than ever and we truly appreciate the community’s ongoing support.” – Event Cinemas Spokesperson
While I understand Event Cinemas has to make commercial decisions, the news is nevertheless difficult to swallow.
Darwin cinema - I will miss you old friend.
